“Miss President, Jane, we at least know who is behind this fiasco.”

“Yes, Dick, and the Williams family just happen to be one of my largest donors. This is a real mess. We have the Brits on one side, not quite deciding what they are going to do, and the Williams family pushing this along at a hell of a rate. The question is, why? Somewhere along the track there’s going to be an almighty train wreck.”

“Plus the re-election in November.”

“Don’t, that hurts.” She placed her hand lightly on Dick’s knee and then said brusquely, the tone of voice balancing the familiarity with her hand, “The thought of being the first-ever female president but not to win re-election is unbearable.”

“We won’t let that happen.” Dick placed his hand on hers, a gesture of reassurance, then jumped up and started pacing around the sitting room, innately knowing when movement and action was appropriate. The President was single. Opponents had spread rumours in 2024 of her lesbian activities. Dick knew they were incorrect and had not stood the test of time, had dissipated. He had acted many times as her companion on official functions; something he and his wife were comfortable with. The President had put other things ahead of marriage and family. It was just how she was. But at fifty-two years old she was still strikingly good-looking and could, he was sure, drum up a date within seconds. He was flattered that instead she chose him to be her companion so often. They were a political double act that had become formidable over the last few years, but it worked through careful restraint.

“Divide and conquer.” It suddenly came to him.

“What do you mean?” In her youthful way she kicked off her shoes and sat next to Dick on the sofa, curling her feet underneath her, looking up at him with her body twisted around.

“There are two components to this problem: the Brits and the Williams. We deal with them separately. We keep each sweet while we sort out the other.”

“Perfect.” She laughed. “Trust you to come up with the idea to save our sorry selves. The question is, which one first?”

“You know the link is Ben Franklin. He seems to have the Williams’ protection and is well in with Fitzroy. Incidentally, is Fitzroy a royal?”

“No,” the President replied. “I had someone do the research. His line goes back to a bastard son of some ancient king. Fitzroy means ‘son of a king’.”

“So he is royal?”

“No way, apparently you only stay royal for two generations. I understand he goes back about ten.”

“So we can come down hard on him and it won’t cause a major diplomatic incident?”

“Correct, although I don’t want any kind of incident. I want this forgotten about come election time.” She made to get up from the sofa, unfurling her long legs, but Dick waved her back, came around the back of the sofa and rubbed her neck with his huge hands. It always calmed her. But this bit
